Our Mission

Swede Hollow Nature Preschool sparks a sense of awe and wonder through play based-learning. Embracing the seasonal dance with nature, children explore our outdoor classroom as active participants in their education. Rooted in emergent curriculum we foster relationships and create connections cultivating positive growth and development.

Location

Swede Hollow Nature Preschool is nestled in the Historic Upper Swede Hollow Neighborhood. Through the gate we have direct access to 25 acres of woods and streams of Swede Hollow Park. As well as the grassy lawns and woodland gardens of Upper Swede Hollow Park, the Indigenous Roots sculpture garden, community and rain gardens. At Swede Hollow Nature Preschool we commit to outside exploration daily. Our connection to outdoor learning provides child led explorations in nature and the broader community through place based learning.

Land Acknowledgement

We acknowledge as we gather we are on the ancestral and contemporary Imniza Ska homeland of the Dakhota people. We honor with gratitude the land itself and the people who have stewarded it throughout the generations.

Indoor Space

Our cozy indoor classrooms are in home, grounding children in a nurturing and loving environment. Through small class size children receive individualized care and attention empowering children to develop meaningful relationships. Our classrooms are filled with open ended materials and artifacts from nature that spark curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking skills. Our small class sizes offer individualized support and scaffolding for children's ideas and interests.

Kristenza cultivated a passion for environmental stewardship in my daughter. In her two-years as my daughter’s preschool teacher I saw my child grow in confidence and practice empathy for her peers. Kristenza guided my child to explore her creativity and connect with her school community.

We had the privilege of getting to know Kristenza throughout an entire school year for our third born four-year-old preschooler. Our only sadness was that we didn't meet her for our older 2!

Kristenza always creates such a welcoming environment that resulted in our daughter knowing that she was valued and important, in Kristenza's presence and always. Kristenza's ability to bring imagination, excitement and wonder into the everyday life around her is inspiring!

In particular, Kristenza's gift of bringing together creative art supplies, such as glue, scissors, fabric, paper, colors, and the natural world, such as leaves, flowers, sticks, feathers, rocks inspired my preschooler to bring the same into her world, even when not with Kristenza.

As a parent, I was inspired to be gentler, more joyful, and more aware of my environment and confidence in new ways to actively engage with my kids and nature.

Laura De Souza Parent of Former Student
Our family has known Kristenza for eight years. She was each of our three children’s preschool teacher. Kristenza is a bright light. She is cheerful and optimistic. She sees the beauty in everyday life. After seeing her most days for the last eight years, she clearly demonstrates an optimism for life that is truly rare. That is why I trust her with my children. This is the type of perspective and attitude I strive to instill in them. She has great empathy, which is also such an important value to our family.

Kristenza finds wonder in and has a deep reverence for the natural world. She is creative and bright. She creates all sorts of amazing crafts for kids based on the natural world: pine cone gnomes, earth clay ornaments with pressed evergreen and berries, fairy houses made out of sticks and moss, and jewelry made of marbles topped with acorns. Her ideas of how to incorporate play and wonder in the natural world are limitless. She has a magic like quality.

She truly embodies the wonder, enchantment, empathy, care, and love of nature which are our highest values we want to instill in our children. We absolutely adore Kristenza and offer our highest recommendation for her.

All three of our children, now in their teens and early adulthood, had the good fortune to have Kristenza as one of their first teachers, and they all still smile and immediately bring up stories and good memories at the mention of her name. Her ability and efforts to help kids develop empathy for others, be creative, feel valued, and engage in critical exploration of the natural environment is amazing. We believe our kids' time in her classrooms has been instrumental in their success and growth. Kristenza's ability to see each child for who they are and to connect with them as unique individuals is a rare gift!
